Wednesday Review Is here! ๐Ÿ‘€ ๐Ÿง Radiology | For the NBDHE + NDHCE Dental Hygiene Board Exams ๐ŸคŸ Q: Using radiation-measuring system conversion, one Gray is equal to how many rad? (A). 100 (B). 300 (C). 1000 (D). 1,000,000 ๐Ÿฆท When measuring radiation, there are two types of systems used: Standard System (the traditional system) and System International (SI, the newer system). ๐Ÿ”น Roentgen (Standard System), Coulomb (C/kg) (System International): measure the exposure (quantity of ionization in the air). The measurement is taken at the skin surface before radiation penetrates the tissues. ๐Ÿ”น Rad (Standard System), Gray (Gy) (System International): measure the absorbed dose (amount of radiation absorbed by an object)., The amount of radiation absorbed will vary depending on the material being radiated. ๐Ÿ”น Rem (Standard System), Sievert (Sv) (System International): measure the dose equivalent (absorbed dose โ€œadjustedโ€ to the biological damage potential of the particular type of radiation). Some types of radiation produce greater effects than others. ๐Ÿฆท Now, in addition to those definitions, we need to memorize some numbers for the Dental Hygiene Board Exams: ๐Ÿ”น 1 Gray = 100 rad ๐Ÿ”น 1 Sv = 100 rem ๐Ÿฅฐ Answer: (A). 100 ๐Ÿ“ข In the image above, I explained how I memorize those numbers, because honestly, we all get confused at some point. For example, if the Dental Hygiene Board Exams ask you โ€œ5000 ram is the equivalent to how many Gray?โ€, will an answer come to mind quickly? This is how I remember it ... notice the three letters in โ€œradโ€ and the three numbers in 100. Can you put them together? 100 rad. ๐Ÿ“ข All you need to do next is memorize that 100 Rad = 1 Gray. Do the same for Rem ... notice the three letters in rem and the three numbers in 100. Put them together to create 100 rem. To answer the question I just asked, 5000 rad = 50 Gray (100 rad = 1 Gray).
