Metronidazole is an anti-infective drug (antibiotics) that is used in dentistry to treat infections caused by anaerobes organisms and aggressive periodontitis. The oral side effects of metronidazole include:
- Metallic taste
- Black hairy tongue
- Xerostomia
Other side effects include nausea, renal toxicity, and headaches.
Answer: (C.) Gingival hyperplasia
In the image, you probably noticed that the man has a black tongue (I chose this image because I did not want to ruin your appetite with a photograph of a real “black tongue”). Now notice the blue shirt matching the blue pills (metronidazole, Flagyl). This is how the memory technique I create should work: When you think of metronidazole, think about this blue pill, then this man with a blue shirt. Then you remember that he had a black tongue! This is how memory champions quickly pack a ton of information in their head: visual (and sensual) association. At StudentRDH dental hygiene board exam reviews (for the NDBHE, NDHCE, WREB, CDCA), we try to introduce you to some tricks for memorization. Now if we start employing those smart methods, I bet you will be able to memorize a lot more information and NEVER forget them.
If you want to learn a little more about the memory method, I made a video on StudentRDH Youtube Channel about local anesthetics. I shared it earlier too but see it again to master this technique. And if you become really good at it, StudentRDH is always looking for super talents, so email me at ClaireJ@StudentRDH.com
